Signs and Syptoms of Irregular Menstruation

Post pregnancy life or life after pregnancy brings so many questions; one of them is about menstruation care after pregnancy. You are constantly wondering as to when you will get your first period after pregnancy.

Many women mistake the bloody discharge after delivery for period. That discharge, however, is not your period, but all the additional fluid coming out of your uterus. This discharge can last from one to two months and women do need to wear pads to avoid staining their clothes.

Dysmenorrhea (Painful Menstrual Periods)

When menstruation starts, the muscles of the uterus contract to expel the lining. These contractions are caused by hormone like substances known as prostaglandins. If the body produces too much, the contractions are stronger and more painful, causing a dull ache or cramp like pain in the lower abdomen or back, and sometimes sickness and diarrhea.

The most fertile period of a woman with a regular 28 day cycle is between day 10 (rarely 9) and day 18. The human ovum is susceptible to fertilization for 24 hours after ovulation. The sperm ejaculated into the vagina can live upto 5 days but can fertilize an ovum only for about 3 days. In a 28-day cycle the unsafe period is from day 7 to 21. The chance of conception is minimum (10/100 women a year) when coitus is avoided during these days. The first day of menses can be marked on a calendar for 6 months. Then by subtracting 18 days from the shortest cycle & 11 days from the longest cycle we get the first and last day of the fertile period, thus coitus should be avoided during this period to avoid conception.

There are some modifiable treatments that could be done to treat infertility. Since this is also associated with obesity, medication for diet could play a vital part in the restoration of fertility. Most women who are obese can be given low-carbohydrate diets. Eating more fruits and vegetables is encouraged. Avoid high fat content foods. If you are going to use oil, use an olive oil or any vegetable oil because they are high in good cholesterols known as High Density Lipoprotein or HDL. These will facilitate the removal of those fats in your kidney.

Other signs and symptoms of the menopause that are often seen include vaginal dryness. Due to the decreased level of estrogen and progesterone released by the ovaries a woman can experience this sign and symptom of the menopause. A vaginal lubricant sold at the local pharmacy can be of great help. Patient and slower sexual relations can be very gratifying for a woman going through menopause. If the problem is more disturbing, consulting one’s physician will be helpful.
