WHAT EXACTLY IS MENSTRUATION?
Actually, the most fertile period of a woman is during the fast few days of the menstrual cycle. Hence as menstruation takes place every month, therefore a woman achieves this vitally important phase I her lifetime every month. If during this time there is intercourse and the male ejaculation takes place within the woman’s vagina, the possibility of a lucky sperm impregnating an egg of the woman is always there.
The last stage of the menstrual cycle is the shedding of an endometrial lining’s blood vessels. Normally, the process of blood forming clots occurs(coagulation) to limit and repair the damaged blood vessel resulting in a stoppage of blood flow. Menorrhagia is an abnormally heavy and prolonged menstrual period with excessive menstrual bleeding lasting longer than 7 days or blood loss exceeding 80 ml caused by abnormal blood clotting, disruption of normal hormonal regulation of periods, or disorders of the endometrial lining of the uterus.
In Ayurveda, menses (i.e. the flow of the menstrual period) is considered to be the excess pitta which flows out of the body. It is called as Raja. Hence the menstrual flow is also called as Raja Pravritti. Though menstruation is a typically pitta phenomenon, effects on the vata and the kapha are also seen. Some women have insomnia and mood swings during their periods. This is vata vitiation. Some women gain weight. This is kapha vitiation.
Women who undergo hysterectomy or the removal of the womb experience cessation of menstruation even before reaching menopause. About 19 percent of females 15 years old and above undergo hysterectomy as a treatment for gynecological problems including pain. In cases where the ovaries are still intact, the secretions of female hormones continue until such time as natural menopausal changes occur. Estrogen replacement therapy is usually administered when the ovaries are removed.
Other menopause signs include hot flashes – a feeling of suddenly becoming very hot that comes and goes; night sweats that attack in the middle of the night; mood swings or erratic behavior similar to – but often more severe than - premenstrual syndrome; memory loss; changes in sexuality including loss of desire and vaginal dryness; and unexplained weight gain.
An over active thyroid gland leads to hyperthyroidism. Here the thyroid process hormones in excess and the woman ends up suffering from fatigue, weight loss, light menstruation or no menstruation, palpitations and increased heart rate. The fact that menstruation stops, points to cessation of ovulation and therefore, infertility.
Treatment is individualized because every patient has a specific issue that caused anorexia and treatment must first solve that issue in order to solve the whole case. One person might be afraid of new situations and changes in life and another might be afraid of growing up and assuming responsibilities. This is why treatment is specific to every patient and is not the same for all people.
